You can now buy the eARC of
No Going Back!

Welcome to the modern book world.

I filed the ms. of No Going Back about 9:30 a.m. this morning. Yes, that means I finished it. Hurrah!

I'm writing this at 9:00 p.m., and you can now buy the electronic Advance Reading Copy, the eARC, of the book from my publisher, Baen Books, by going here.

This eARC was available about ten hours after I turned it in. Ten hours. That's cool.

Baen's eARC program works like this. They sell the uncorrected version of a book, meaning the book has not been through the full copyediting and proofreading stages of the production process, online for those who want to read the book early. This version is basically what the author submitted to them. The cost of an eARC is $15. If you wait until late May, when the book goes on sale, you can buy it online for $6, which is obviously much less. But you'll have to wait two and a half months! Who wants to do that? No one! For a measly nine extra bucks, you get early access to the book and can be the first person you know to read it!

That the book went live so soon after I filed it is due to Publisher Toni quickly okaying the sale of the eARC, and then two people working hard on the job. Joy Freeman, who produced the proofs for the book, turned them in record time, mere hours. Becky Catchings then worked late to create the eARC in all the many formats that Baen supports--and if it's at all a significant ebook format, Baen supports it.

My contribution was to turn in very clean copy that is ready to print; I consider that to be a part of the job.

I hope you check it out and enjoy it!

Congratulations! I can't wait to read it! I can't wait two months, so eArc, here I come.

Holy awesome! I didn't even know this existed. I'm so glad you pointed this out. $15 is a pittance for early access!

I hope you get a portion of this higher price, then I'll really be happy to spend the extra money. Can't wait to start digging in.

Thanks for the kind words and the support, folks. I hope you enjoy the book. I'm rather happy with it, at least right now.

Baen's ebook program in general and its eARC program in particular are awesome.

Yes, I do get a percentage of the sales as royalties, as will all book sales.

I'm up to Chapter 24 and the only reason I'm willing to stop is it's 11:30PM and I have to get up at 6 in the morning. This is an awesome book, and the revelations in Chapter 10 darn near made me drop my teeth, which are NOT dentures, let me add.

I can't wait to see how this comes out.

Thank you.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. More revelations to come!

Wow, congratulations, Mark!

I was expecting to have to wait months for this; I'm going to have to suspend my re-read of "Name of the Wind" to read this one right away.

Another great book in the Series. I just finished it. The best book I read so far this year. You, Sir, have great talent.

I am sorry to ask you this, as you just worked hard to finish this one, but I really hope the next book will come soon.

Thank you.

Thanks, Andy and Pierre, for the kind word and the support.

Pierre, I really appreciate the kind words. I don't know yet what my next book will be or when it will appear.

So I'm skipping work, staying up late, and loving this book! I need to surf through prior posts to find the answer, but I'll ask it here out of laziness:
I'm on the part where Jon first listens to Passion's music, and I'm curious who do you hear when you wrote that? What songs played on repeat as you were writing?

Mark said...

Thanks for the kind words, Brian.

For Passion's voice, I actually hear a unique voice but something with the clarity of early Joan Baez and the power of Janis Joplin--but a pure voice.

I played so many different albums during this book that I couldn't name them all.

I hope that someday soon you can challenge the Amazon sales might of Wesley Crusher, Teenage Fuck Machine.

I just posted an announcement and a little feedback for the book on Fantasy Book Critic today and I plan a full review in May

Well, I've finished reading the book. Mark, it was very good; the overall pacing was excellent, and the story was engrossing.

Here's something strange. This book completely changed the feel of the previous books for me. Before this one, I viewed them as a continuing series, gradually developing the characters and situations. But after finishing this one, I now feel that all the previous books taken together represent an "Act I" of a full story arc; Act I is now over, and you're ready to start on the second act. Anyone else have this feeling ?

Thanks for the kind words, Andy. I'm glad you enjoyed the book. I think your point about the series is fair in the sense that this book really does change a great many things, and Jon's world will never be the same again. But, such events happen in all our lives; we just do not always recognize them when they occur.
